As a pair of 30 somethings we met at a friend's wedding at a time when we were both ready to meet someone new.

We discovered on our third date that we shared a dream to pack up our careers & set up a small guest house in Cornwall.  Somewhere that we'd like to stay - clean, stylish, roomy & light.  A place where all the little details were just right.

We visited Padstow, took a look at a couple of houses for a giggle & next thing you know we're in the business of renovating an old listed building!
About us...
Our boy Harry  Harry John was born on Christmas Day 2008.  Don't worry - he's nowhere near the B&B anymore!! We've just put his photo here as so many of our lovely former guests ask after him so often.

For anyone who met him as a baby - no we can't believe how big he is now either!
Our Team...
We have some superb folk helping us here at Coswarth House.  We've been very lucky to find staff who share our values & our commitment to quality.
Hannah:

You'll see making sure your rooms are in tip top condition & she may well check you in if you arrive early & we're not around.

Hannah's an extremely talented, competition winning surfer & she's just been sponsored by Animal.

Great news for her but sadly we're likely to lose her next year.  Apparently being paid to go on modelling shoots & surfing trips in the Maldives is more appealing employment!
Mark & Tonia bought Coswarth House as their new home in February 2011 & have decided to try their hand at the B&B game in 2012.

You may meet them in the background this year as they shadow us to pick up the ropes.

It's become clear very quickly that Tonia shares Mary's exacting eye for detail & as a former partner at KPMG Mark clearly knows how to run a slick business operation.

They're a lovely couple (a comment not influenced by the fact that they now pay our wages!) & we know that they look after our guests at least as well as we would.

We opened Coswarth House for business in March 2007 & were lucky enough in our first year to be awarded a 5 star rating with a silver award by Visit Britain.  We were delighted when they decided to upgrade us to a gold award in 2008 - a rating we've continued to maintain for four years.  We thought that couldn't be topped but then the great traveling public voted us one of the world's top ten "hidden gems" through the travel review website Tripadvisor.

Mary is a former manager in Human Resources but she gave up that career to train as a yoga teacher & massage therapist.  To the disappointment of her students & clients, she met a very un-yogic creature in the form of Mike.  Mary is the one to ask about uplifting views, bracing walks & the best nature watching opportunities.

Mike spent 12 years in the Army, leaving as a Captain in the Infantry.  He spent six years working as a senior Operations Manager for the National Health Service &, until meeting Mary, was planning to give it up for a round-world motorbike trip.  Mike is the one to talk to about the best local roads for motorbikes, the best place for a pint & good places to eat.

Together we hope that we make a pretty good team with Mary's creative edge & exacting eye for detail being complemented by Mike's experience in making sure things are well managed & running a slick operation.

We hope that our professional backgrounds have helped us a little but mostly we've found that whatever success we've enjoyed seems to be down to paying attention to the little details & genuinely caring for guests with a bit of warmth.  We've also travelled a lot, stayed in a some great places & too many not so great places so we think we know what tired & stressed people are looking for from a short break away.

We lived at Coswarth House running our B&B until February 2011 when, having received an unexpected offer for the house, we sold up to move onto another project nearby - renovating an old farmhouse & setting up a (very small!) smallholding.

We remain very much involved at Coswarth House as the new owners have asked us to stay on to run the house in 2012 & show them the ropes so that they too can enter the B&B game.
